Clutch Overhaul
Clutch Overhaul in Ajman — What It Involves and When You Need One
The clutch is the most driver-dependent mechanical component in a manual vehicle.
How long it lasts depends almost entirely on how it is used. A driver with smooth, measured clutch habits can get 150,000 km from a single clutch. Another driver with aggressive habits on the same vehicle might need a replacement at 60,000 km.
But eventually — regardless of driving style — every clutch reaches the end of its service life. And when it does, a professional clutch overhaul is what brings the vehicle back to the way it should drive.
At Marwat Garage Ajman, we carry out complete clutch overhauls for all manual transmission vehicles across the UAE.
Three Components. One System.
The clutch is not a single part — it is an assembly of three components that work together.
The clutch disc is the friction plate that sits between the flywheel and the pressure plate. It is the component that actually wears — its friction lining gradually thins with every gear change until there is not enough material left to transmit engine power without slipping.
The pressure plate is a spring-loaded clamping mechanism that holds the clutch disc firmly against the flywheel when the clutch is engaged. Over time, the springs weaken and the contact surface wears. A weak pressure plate cannot clamp with sufficient force — contributing directly to clutch slip.
The release bearing — also called the throw-out bearing — is what your foot actually operates when you press the clutch pedal. It pushes against the pressure plate fingers to disengage the clutch. It runs on every clutch pedal depression and wears accordingly.
In a clutch overhaul, all three components are replaced simultaneously. Replacing only one while leaving the others in a worn condition is a false economy — the remaining worn parts will cause premature failure of the new component.
The Signs That Tell You a Clutch Overhaul Is Due
Clutch slip The clearest sign. You accelerate, the engine revs climb, but the vehicle does not accelerate in proportion — the engine is spinning faster than it is moving the car. This means the clutch disc can no longer transmit full engine torque without slipping.
Test it this way: find a quiet road, engage a high gear at low speed, and accelerate firmly. If the engine revs rise sharply without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed, the clutch is slipping.
High biting point The biting point — where the clutch starts to engage as you release the pedal — should be roughly mid-travel. When it creeps toward the top of the pedal travel, the clutch disc is worn thin and needs replacement soon.

Difficulty engaging gears A clutch that does not disengage fully — due to a worn or stuck release bearing, hydraulic issue, or warped clutch disc — makes gear selection difficult. Crunching or resistance when changing gears, particularly into first or reverse, is a symptom worth investigating.
Juddering on take-off A shuddering vibration as the clutch engages from a standstill points to a contaminated or unevenly worn clutch disc. Oil contamination from a leaking crankshaft seal is a common cause — the oil soaks into the friction lining and destroys the smooth engagement.
Burning smell A sharp, acrid burning smell — particularly in traffic, on hills, or after a hill start — is the smell of clutch friction material overheating. Occasional faint smell after a difficult manoeuvre is normal. A persistent or strong smell indicates the clutch is slipping excessively and wearing rapidly.
Clutch pedal noise A squealing or grinding sound when pressing the clutch pedal — particularly if it changes as the pedal is depressed — is typically the release bearing wearing out. The bearing is under load whenever the pedal is pressed, and a worn bearing makes its presence known.
What a Clutch Overhaul Actually Requires
This is not a small job.
The clutch sits between the engine and the gearbox. To access it, the gearbox must be separated from the engine and moved back — or in front-wheel-drive vehicles, the engine and gearbox assembly may need to be partially lowered. This is significant labour work, which is why a clutch overhaul is one of the more time-intensive services in mechanical repair.
At Marwat Garage Ajman, the process is thorough.
The vehicle is lifted and the underside accessed. The exhaust, propeller shaft or driveshafts, and gearbox support are disconnected as required for the specific vehicle. The gearbox is removed to expose the clutch assembly.
The old clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing are removed and inspected. The flywheel surface is checked for heat scoring, glazing, or cracking — a worn flywheel fitted with a new clutch disc shortens the new disc’s life significantly.
If the flywheel surface is within specification, it is resurfaced. If it is below minimum thickness or cracked, replacement is recommended.
New clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing are fitted as a matched set. The clutch disc is centred precisely using an alignment tool — this step is critical for smooth engagement after reassembly.
The gearbox is reinstalled, all disconnected components refitted, and the clutch hydraulic system bled if applicable. The vehicle is road tested to confirm clean, smooth clutch engagement across all gears before handover.
The service takes approximately eight hours. A three-month warranty is provided.
Driving Habits That Extend Clutch Life in the UAE
Stop-and-go traffic in Ajman is hard on clutches — that is unavoidable. But some habits make things significantly worse.
Resting your foot on the clutch pedal applies partial pressure to the release bearing continuously. The bearing wears far faster under constant load than when the pedal is fully released between gear changes.
Slipping the clutch to hold position on a hill generates enormous heat in the friction disc. Use the handbrake for hill starts rather than balancing on the clutch.
Changing gears aggressively — particularly short-shifting at high revs or dumping the clutch from high revs — puts sudden shock load through the clutch disc and pressure plate springs.
Carrying heavy loads frequently increases the torque the clutch must transmit — accelerating wear on the friction lining.
None of these habits are unique to UAE drivers, but Ajman’s dense traffic conditions make some of them — particularly riding the clutch in slow traffic — more tempting and more damaging here than in free-flowing conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a clutch overhaul last? With good driving habits, a professionally installed clutch should last 80,000–120,000 km. In heavy urban traffic with frequent hill starts — common in some parts of Ajman — 60,000–80,000 km is more realistic.
Can the clutch be adjusted instead of replaced? On vehicles with a mechanical clutch cable, adjustment can temporarily compensate for a rising biting point. But adjustment addresses the symptom, not the wear. If the disc is worn thin, adjustment only extends its life by a short period before full replacement becomes unavoidable.
What happens if I keep driving on a slipping clutch? Continued use of a slipping clutch generates extreme heat. This heat can harden and glaze the flywheel surface, damage the pressure plate, and in severe cases warp the flywheel itself — turning a clutch-only replacement into a flywheel replacement as well. The cost of waiting is always higher than the cost of replacing.
Does the flywheel always need replacing with the clutch? Not always. The flywheel is inspected and measured during every clutch overhaul. If the surface is within specification and free of cracks or heat damage, resurfacing is sufficient. Replacement is recommended only when the flywheel is genuinely beyond serviceable limits.
How long does a clutch overhaul take? Approximately eight hours at Marwat Garage Ajman. Some vehicle models with more difficult gearbox access may require additional time.
My clutch started slipping suddenly rather than gradually. Why? Sudden clutch slip — rather than a gradual increase over thousands of kilometres — usually points to contamination. Oil from a leaking rear crankshaft seal or gearbox input shaft seal soaking into the clutch disc causes immediate loss of friction. In this case, the leak source must be identified and sealed as part of the overhaul, or the new clutch will fail quickly for the same reason.
Book Your Clutch Overhaul at Marwat Garage Ajman
A slipping clutch does not get better on its own. Every kilometre driven on a clutch that is past its service life adds heat, wear, and the risk of secondary damage to components that cost more to repair.
Marwat Garage Ajman carries out complete clutch overhauls with matched component sets, correct flywheel assessment, and thorough road testing before every handover.

Frequently Asked Questions
We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help you answer
some of the more common ones.
The cost varies depending on your car’s make, model, and the type of key system it uses. Basic remote key fob programming is affordable, while smart key and proximity key programming for newer vehicles may cost more due to the advanced software required. Call us on +971-564761112 for a specific quote for your car.
In most cases, yes — but it depends on the make and model. Some vehicles require at least one working key to programme a new remote, while others allow a complete key replacement via OBD2 access. Our technicians will advise you after a quick diagnostic check.
If a fresh battery has not solved the problem, your key fob may have lost its synchronisation with the car’s ECU — this is a common issue after a battery change or flat car battery. The fix is a simple reprogramming, which we can do while you wait at our garage in Ajman.
Most key fob programming jobs take between 30 minutes and one hour. Smart key programming for newer models may take slightly longer if it requires extended ECU communication. We will give you an accurate time estimate when you bring in your vehicle.
We can source compatible replacement key fob shells and remotes for most popular vehicle makers sold in the UAE. If you already have a new fob, we can programme it for you. Call ahead to confirm availability for your specific model.
