What Power Steering Fluid Actually Does

Power steering fluid is the hydraulic medium that makes your steering light and effortless.

When you turn the wheel, the power steering pump pushes fluid through hoses to the steering rack or steering box. That hydraulic pressure multiplies your input and makes a heavy SUV feel as easy to steer as a small hatchback.

The fluid also lubricates the pump, protects the seals inside the rack, and carries heat away from the system.

Over time, heat breaks down its chemical structure. Rubber particles from ageing hoses and seals contaminate it. The fluid turns dark, loses its lubricating properties, and starts causing more harm than good.

In Ajman’s climate, this happens faster than most manufacturers’ service intervals assume. UAE summer temperatures push under-bonnet heat well beyond what many systems were designed for.

Signs Your Power Steering Fluid Needs Attention

You do not need a warning light for this one. Your car tells you in other ways.

• Whining or squealing on turns — particularly in car parks or tight roundabouts. The pump is struggling with degraded fluid.
• Stiff steering at low speeds — especially on cold mornings before the engine warms up, or when parking.
• Shuddering or jerky feel through the wheel — hydraulic pressure is becoming inconsistent.
• Dark or foamy fluid in the reservoir — healthy fluid is clear to light amber. Dark brown or black means it is overdue.
• Slow return to centre — after a turn, the wheel takes more effort than usual to come back straight.

Any one of these is worth checking. More than one means it is time to flush.

Hydraulic vs Electric Power Steering — Does Your Car Have a Pump?

Before booking a flush, it helps to know which system your vehicle uses.

• Hydraulic power steering uses a belt-driven pump and fluid-filled hoses. This system needs regular fluid maintenance — and it is what this service covers. Most larger and older vehicles in the UAE use hydraulic setups — Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols, older Camrys and Corollas, most trucks and SUVs.
• Electric power steering (EPS) uses a motor instead of a pump. No fluid, no flush needed. Many newer vehicles use EPS — newer Civics, recent Elantras, and most modern European cars.

To check: look under the bonnet for a small reservoir with a steering wheel symbol on the cap. If it is there, you have hydraulic steering and this service applies.
